02/13/09 - To the Cigar,

Although many people argue Valentine's Day is the most commercialized and ridiculous holiday of the year, I have to argue the contrary.

I have worked at Jasmine and Ivy Flowers and Gifts, located on the first floor of Memorial Union, for over a year.

This being my second Valentine's Day as a florist, I can't help but notice the love and happiness I encounter every day during the month of February.

During the week before Valentine's, the phone at Jasmine and Ivy is ringing off the hook, with orders coming in from students, parents and faculty. Men are calling from Army bases, Europe and throughout the United States hoping to order something special for their girlfriends. Above all, everyone shopping is eager to find the perfect present for that special someone.

As someone who has been in a relationship for more than three years, I always welcome a day of romance, affection and most importantly love. With all the pressure of everyday life, sometimes we forget to show the ones we care about how much they mean to us.

Valentine's Day allows us to step outside the stress of everyday life and celebrate with the people we treasure.

Even if you are not in a relationship, we all have people in our lives we love. So, get bitten by Cupid's arrow.

Don't denounce a day of caring, love and affection.

Follow the Valentine's Day spirit and visit me at Jasmine and Ivy, where there are fresh roses, assorted flowers, gourmet chocolate, adorable stuffed animals and so much more.

But most importantly, have a HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
