The advice has probably been pounded into your head for years—get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. For college students, this may seem almost impossible. With all of the work that gets piled up during the week and the crazy college weekends, who has time to sleep for seven hours? You may think it’s unimportant to get that much sleep, but studies show that losing out on sleep can have detrimental effects to your health.

Persevere, it will pay off

In just less than two-and-a-half weeks, classes will be ending for students at the University of Rhode Island. April 30, to be exact. For those of you reading this with your jaw hanging open, this is your warning. It may have come up fast, but exams are nearly upon us.

Imagine if one of your friends mentioned that they had eaten six meals the previous day. Would you think that was strange, or even gross? American culture has constructed a strict pattern of eating three square meals a day, and straying from it can even seem culturally wrong. Most people are used to breakfast in the morning (or just skip it altogether), lunch in the afternoon and dinner at night as their biggest meal.

Crazy spring breaks are no longer the norm

With spring break around the corner, all everyone seems to be talking about is what they're doing over the break. To be sure, there are the lucky few going on cruises to tropical islands or getting wild in Miami, but for the most part, people seem, to me at least, to be content with going home and seeing family and friends.

Keep it Safe

Yesterday officially marked the midpoint of the semester on the academic calendar and the end of the day tomorrow marks the beginning of spring break for University of Rhode Island students. Editorial: Bullying and prevention

It seems as though an increasing theme around this time of the year is politics. We have primaries on a state-by-state basis, and everyone is looking for a seat as the commander in chief. Trickle back to the University of Rhode Island and there is another presidency race for the position in the Student Senate. Tough it out: it’s a New England winter

Ask a number of students at the University of Rhode Island, and you will hear something along these lines. No "oh this snow isn't bad at all," or "it makes sense, we do live in New England." Nope, all you'll get is a barrage of complaints about the "terrible weather" of the past few days, and the unfairness that after such an unseasonably warm winter, the snow is getting its revenge. No appreciation of those nearly-60-degree days. Just a litany of ludicrous complaints.

Bruins’ Tim Thomas must put politics aside, focus attention toward team rather than self

The Tim Thomas of late is plaguing the Boston Bruins, a team which has become known for its ability to both win and lose together. Much of the success the Bruins had last year was because of their ability to remain whole as a unit, standing up for each other when it

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase "mindful eating?" According to the Center for Mindful Eating, part of this concept is, "Learning to be aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decision to begin eating and to stop eating." This sounds like something that should come naturally to everyone, but in an age where food is available on any corner and in any quantity, it's easier said than done.

Editorial: Stay Connected

The thousands of undergraduates that come to the University of Rhode Island campus on the first day of classes come from a variety of backgrounds. Some traveled from across the world to Kingston, whereas other students grew up just a few blocks away. Many came to college knowing many other students from high school. Others, came to freshman orientation knowing no one else and looking to make new connections. However, no matter where URI students started from, they all have one thing in common by the end of their baccalaureate career—their experiences at URI.
