Jim Baron fired after 11 seasons

For the first time ever, someone other than Jim Baron will coach the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.

Yesterday Baron was released from his contract with two years remaining. It was announced that Baron's buyout would come from external sources and not state funds or student tuition hikes.

"I would like to thank Jim Baron for his 11 years of committed service to the University of Rhode Island," URI Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn said. "During his tenure at URI, Jim represented himself, his family and our men's basketball program with the utmost class and professionalism."

Baron finished his URI tenure with a record of 184-166, five appearances in the National Invitation Tournament and three Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year awards. He coached his eldest son Jimmy, who finished as the A-10 leader in career three-pointers made with 361. Baron's younger son, Billy, has two years of eligibility remaining at URI.

A national search will begin immediately to find a replacement.
