A new era in Rhody sports began yesterday when Dan Hurley formally accepted his position as head coach of the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team.

Staten Island-based website SIlive.com reported that the deal is for six years and could pay Hurley in excess of $4 million.

Hurley, 39, coached the previous two seasons at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., accumulating a 38-23 record. This past season his Seahawks turned in a 25-6 season that included a win over the University of Pittsburgh.

"We are thrilled to name Dan Hurley as our new head men's basketball coach," Rhode Island athletic director Thorr Bjorn said in a press release. "Dan is a proven winner at every level and I am looking forward to partnering with him to build on the solid foundation we have in place. Our goals are to compete for, and win, Atlantic 10 Championships and advance to play in NCAA Tournaments."

Hurley was the front-runner for the position after former coach Jim Baron was fired on March 4.

Hurley earned his stripes coaching as an assistant at famed New Jersey prep school St. Anthony's under his father, Bob. In 2001 Hurley took the head coaching position at Saint Benedict's Prep School in Newark, N.J. and amassed a 223-21 record in nine years.

"URI is committed to excellence across the board, including intercollegiate athletics," URI President David M. Dooley. "Hiring Dan Hurley as our new head coach in men's basketball reflects that commitment. We are delighted that Dan shares our vision to build a high quality program that puts the student-athlete first and competes at the highest level, and we are confident that he will be successful here."

Hurley played for his father in high school and won a national championship in 1989. He also scored more than 1,000 points during his collegiate career at Seton Hall University.

A press conference to formally introduce Hurley will be held in Keaney Gymnasium today at 2:30 p.m. and will be open to the public.
