The University of Rhode Island softball team played two doubleheaders over the weekend. The first was against Temple University on Friday and the latter on Sunday against Saint Joseph's University. The Rams lost the first three games and the fourth game ended in a tie due to rain.

The Rams are now winless in their last six games.

"We knew April was going to be tough for us," head coach Erin Layton said. "We're just a small piece away from putting it all together."

Despite out-hitting the Owls on Friday by two, the Rams only managed to plate four runs, three of which came in the bottom of the third. Senior Brittany Julich had one hit and crossed the plate twice. Senior Nicole Massoni led the team in RBIs with a two-run single. Sophomore Stacey Fox was the only Rhody player to have a multi-hit game; she went 2-3 as the Rams lost to a final score of 7-4.

Sophomore Sam Bedore allowed five runs on three hits, but had trouble finding the plate as she walked seven Temple batters.

The second half of Friday was not as closely contested as the first. The Rams were out-hit 14-9 and outscored 10-1 in five innings. Junior Kelly Coker had two hits in three at bats and Massoni hit her sixth double of the year.

Junior Erika Szymanski pitched a complete game for Rhody. Through the first four innings Szymanski faired well, allowing only four runs, which kept it a three-run game. However, in the top of the fifth, the game slipped away when she allowed six runs.

After a day off Saturday, the Rams took the field Sunday verse Saint Josephs. The first four innings were a pitchers duel, as Rhody found itself up one run going into the fifth inning, thanks to a RBI single by sophomore Jocelyn Mattison.

However, in the fifth and sixth innings, starting pitcher Szymanski, Bedore and sophomore Cassie Baker couldn't get the job done as they allowed 11 runs in the final two innings. The three combined for 11 hits and 11 runs, eight of which were earned throughout the game.

In the afternoon game, freshman Cara Martin pitched five innings. She gave up five hits and three runs; she also walked four and struck out five.

Offensively Coker hit a double, drove in a run and crossed home plate once as well. Senior Courtney Prendergast went 1-2 and walked once, the one hit resulted in the team-leading 50th of the year.

The Rams now have a record of 18-27-1 overall and 2-9-1 in conference play, but with eight conference games still on the schedule, the team still has a chance to move up. The Rams take the field again today for a double header at the University of Massachusetts.

"As coaches we're trying to focus on the positives," Layton said. "It's important to stay dedicated, we have a chance to make great improvements the rest of the way."
