Club climbs its way to senate funds

10/1/09 - The University of Rhode Island Outing Club received $1,200 to subsidize the cost of rock climbing passes at yesterday's Student Senate meeting.

The Outing Club plans to purchase 100 punch passes to the Rhode Island Rock Gym in Lincoln, R.I. to cover climbing lessons, gear rentals and a full night of climbing. Outing Club Treasurer Joe Attwater said passes usually cost $15 on college nights and $20 every other night.

"The punch passes keep the members active and interested in the club," Attwater said.

According to Attwater, the club is charging members $2 for each pass, which will go back to senate. He said members can use the passes any night of the week, but the Outing Club Executive Board will limit students to one pass a week.

Attwater said the club has been getting $1,200 from senate every semester for a while, and that the club is buying the passes at a reduced rate.

Student Senate Finance Committee Chairman Allen Petit said the reduced passes help keep members interested in the club by giving them the opportunity to rock climb at a discounted rate.

-The Student Senate election booth will be open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
