04/11/08 - University of Rhode Island sophomore leftfielder Zoey Angulo won with his walk off double plating two runs in the 6-5 victory over Siena College.
Angulo, who in his previous at bats went 0-3, came up with the bases loaded after an intentional walk to designated hitter freshman Jeff Cammans. Angulo banged a double to left that hit the bottom of the wall to score the winning run.
"I'm just happy to get a win," Angulo said. "We needed it. Overall, it was a great team win. Everyone contributed and it was nice to see."
Head coach Jim Foster agreed with Angulo that they needed a win. "It was a great win," he said. "The guys have been putting in the effort with not much to show. I'm real proud of them."
The Rams were down 5-2 before the bottom of the ninth inning began. Senior Zach Zaneski led off the inning with a bunt hit to third and advanced on a walk to freshman right fielder Tom Coulombe. The bases were loaded after senior first baseman Mike O'Malley was hit by a pitch. The next at bat saw two runs scored on a hard hit double to right center by sophomore centerfielder Rob Deveney. This set the stage for Angulo's heroics.
"I just wanted to get two guys on," Foster said about the bottom of the ninth. "The kid [Siena pitcher Maikel Hurtado] had control problems. They loaded the bases and it was nice to see Zoey come through."
Foster also commented on Deveney's double. "Deveney did a nice job staying inside the baseball," he said. "That was the best swing I've seen all year."
Freshman Cam Fox, a submarine-style pitcher, earned his first collegiate win in his first appearance this season. Foster put him in to start the ninth inning. He forced a ground out to third, then walked Siena's catcher. He followed up with a strikeout and a fly out to center.
"He was in the right spot at the right time," Foster said. "He was a walk-on in the fall and earned his way on [the team]. We turned him into a submarine pitcher. He is working real hard to master that delivery."
