04/09/08 - After being rained out on Friday, the University of Rhode Island baseball team played two games on Saturday and one game on Sunday, losing two of the three games to Duquesne University.
During the Rams' Saturday doubleheader, the team had a come-from-behind victory in game one, 7-5, but lost in game two 4-1.
"The first game on Saturday we battled back and did a nice job," head coach Jim Foster said. "In the second game the Duquesne starter [sophomore Paul Bugajski] pitched a good game. We also had a good pitching performance by Eric Smith. [Sunday] we had too many little mistakes."
Senior right hander Brett Palanski had a rough first inning during game one on Saturday, giving up four runs in the first inning. He would go seven innings giving up only one more run.
URI chipped away at Duquesne's lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs. Freshman right fielder Pete Mastors walked and advanced to second when senior second baseman Mike O'Malley was hit by a pitch. Catcher Zach Zaneski scorched a double down the left field line, plating Mastors. The designated hitter, Shaun Hagey, walked to load the bases and centerfielder Rob Deveney walked to draw in a run, chalking up the score 4-2. Freshman first baseman Evan Laude flied out to left to end the inning.
Palanski gave up another run in the top of the sixth, but the Rams finally took the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on four hits.
Deveney led off with a liner down the left field line while Laude hit a shot up the middle. With two on and no one out, the shortstop Dan Rhault bunted to the pitcher and reached on a fielders' choice. The leftfielder, Zoey Angulo, had an infield hit to first scoring Deveney. Mastors swung a pitch back to the pitcher who fumbled the ball allowing Mastors to reach first and scored Laude making the score 5-4. A past ball during O'Malley's at bat tied the game. URI took the 6-5 lead on an O'Malley sacrifice fly to center.
