Letter: Violence can be stemmed by arming police, says alumnus
Issue date: 4/3/08 Section: Editorial/Opinion
04/03/08 - To the Cigar,
I wish to comment on the issue pertaining to the "would be" armed officers on the URI campus. It is my understanding that the Campus Police have all participated in the mandatory State Police training, and therefore the extra cost to train these officers seems to be no more than a bureaucratic policy to cut costs.
If this is the case, and I would suggest your journalists investigate, then I think the police should have guns as part of their arsenal. There are far too many instances of senseless violence that have taken place the past two years at various universities not to have the first response unit armed.
I am no longer a student at URI but I was always in favor of those whose job it was to serve and protect me to be able to do so in the most efficient way possible.
