03/27/08 - The University of Rhode Island Student Senate unanimously confirmed the budget funding student groups proposed by the Finance Committee at last night's meeting.
The $845,000 budget will provide funds to 64 student groups.
The budget is funded by an $80 student fee an expected 10,000 students will pay next year. An additional $45,000 surplus from this year will also be rolled into the budget.
Of the total budget, $793,343 was directly given to student groups, which left $51,656 for contingencies. Contingencies are used to provide funding for organizations that need additional money for unexpected expenses. These can include an event a group wants to hold or travel funds.
Groups are divided into four levels of classification from I to IV.
Level I groups are governmental based or have a large impact on the student body. Level I groups usually have the largest budgets. Level I groups include the Student Entertainment Committee, Student Senate and The Good Five Cent Cigar.
Level II groups are granted individual budgets based on annual costs and past events. These groups tend to teach the members a skill or hold events for URI students. The URI Scuba Club, URI Surf Club and Ballroom Dancing Club are all Level II groups.
Level III groups are provided a $210 financial benefits package. The 35 Level III groups are typically general interest groups.
Level IV groups are all given a $10 budget to cover copying and printing costs. Level IV indicates that a group's central focus involves charity or involvement within academic departments. There are nine Level IV groups.
