03/13/08 - The University of Rhode Island softball team concluded its trip to Fresno, Calif., last Saturday, losing its final game to Cal Poly, 9-0.

"Against Cal Poly we didn't play well," head coach Deb Smith said. "There were some pretty solid performances against some other teams."

URI played six games in four days, going 0-6. On Thursday, the Rams lost to Santa Clara University, 5-1, and to DePaul University, 3-2. They lost to Sacramento State University 13-1, and Houston, 8-1, on Friday. The trip ended with two losses, with one at Fresno State University, 8-0 and at Cal Poly, 9-0.

"Overall, we were inconsistent," Smith said. "We are focusing on cleaning up defensively."

Senior pitcher Jill Anderson started for the Rams against Cal Poly, pitching five innings and allowing nine hits, nine runs (five earned), two walks and two strikeouts.

The game was called after five innings. Anderson was off her game, giving up a leadoff double to center field. After a sacrifice bunt, back-to-back triples and a sacrifice fly, the Cal Poly Mustangs had scored three runs.

The Rams would never reach the plate, but sophomore Leah DiBussolo had two of Rhode Island's four hits. She singled to center in the second and had a double to right field in the fourth.

Cal Poly added onto its lead in the third with two runs. Four more runs were added in the fourth inning to get the win, 9-0.

Rhode Island committed three errors to the Mustangs' one, but the last game was not a true showing of the overall performance at the invitational, Smith said.

"We played very poorly the first game [against Santa Clara] but against DePaul, a ranked team, we played very, very well," she said. "Jill Anderson pitched a phenomenal game."

Anderson pitched seven innings allowing nine hits and three unearned runs, striking out one.

The DePaul Blue Demons scored all of their unearned runs in the second when URI committed two errors allowing the runners to score. DePaul would keep this lead to win 3-2 but URI attempted a comeback.
