03/07/08 - The University of Rhode Island men's hockey team finished seventh in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I National Championships this past week in New York, losing in the quarter finals to the University of Illinois, 6-2.

"I think our team played like they did all year, very inconsistent," head coach Joe Augustine said. "We never played a whole game where we played a good game."

The ninth seed Rams played West Chester University, which was ranked No. 8, in the first round Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and won 6-4 to move to the quarter finals.

Augustine said that his team didn't start off well, but had good second and third periods.

The team was down 4-2 in the second period, but was able to muster four goals in the third period for the win.

The come-from-behind win was unusual because Augustine said that his team did not score a lot of goals this year.

URI took an early lead in the first period of the game when senior James Gaffney scored with 9:47 left on the clock, assisted by senior Stephen Gaffney. Freshman Paul Doran scored less than a minute later, and was assisted by freshman Kyle Krannich to make the score 2-0 in URI's favor.

The last two goals of the period were scored by West Chester, with sophomore Drew Mervin at the 6:16 mark, and freshman Justin Lewandowski at 1:08. The only goals scored in the second period were by West Chester.

URI did not allow West Chester to score in the third period. Stephen Gaffney scored unassisted before freshman Devon Sheehan scored again, assisted by junior Matt Wodecki, to tie the score, 4-4.

Sheehan, assisted by Krannich and sophomore Andrew Lisi, also scored the next goal with 7:50 left on the clock to take the 5-4 lead. James Gaffney scored the last goal with for the win with 1:22 left in the game.

The Rams proceeded to play the University of Illinois on Sunday.

"Illinois was good in the first," Augustine said about his team's play against the No. 1 seed. "It was not so good in the second."
