03/06/08 - You'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't agree that going to a concert to hear and see music performed live is the best way to experience that music. Aside from the artists performing, the venue also plays a large part in that experience.

Going to see a concert at an arena with a name as inspiring and imaginative as Providence's own Dunkin' Donuts Center is usually a great time, but there is something about stadiums that takes away from the energy and feeling that seeing your favorite band live can give you.

Often the best place to see a band is a cramped and cluttered club that looks like it's on the verge of being shut down by the local health inspector.

Although I can safely say that Club Hell seems like it meets all health regulations, it is that cramped and cluttered club (complete with a rendition of the Mona Lisa on the wall) that makes for a great show.

Last week, headliners RX Bandits, along with local opening acts Arcadia Landing and Fang Island, filled Club Hell with enough sinful rock 'n' roll to live up to the infamous place just south of purgatory the club is named after.

Opening the show was Providence's own Arcadia Landing. According to the band's bio on its MySpace, the band is from "a far away galaxy" and brought along spaced out songs filled with heavy, driving guitars, and big choruses that any fan could easily find himself singing along to. The band also debuted a new song, which, according to singer/guitarist Seth Printer, was finished only two days prior to the show.

Next up was the mainly instrumental five-piece, Fang Island. Hitting the stage with three guitars, the band grabbed the attention of almost everyone in the club. With its blend of punk, ambience, and straightforward rock, mixed in with technical playing, the band was really fun to watch and seemed capable of surprising you with every chord change.

Mixed into the instrumental songs was occasional chanting done by the entire band laid just over the percussion. Needless to say, Fang Island put on an exciting show.
