02/26/08 - Thomas Ahrens and Josh Feinberg are the two declared candidates running for University of Rhode Island Student Senate president.
When Feinberg entered the race two weeks ago, he created a contested election. Typically the first round of elections - held Feb. 12 and 13 - is used to narrow the presidential field to the top two candidate sets that receive the most votes. Because there are only two nominees, Feinberg and Ahrens' names did not appear on the Feb. 12 and 13 ballots, but will be on the ballots Wednesday and Thursday.
The elected candidate will be sworn in on March 26, and hold the presidency from then until March 2009.
Presidential Candidate: Josh Feinberg
Vice Presidential Running Mate: Eric Klos
If elected, Josh Feinberg said he would aim to build a stronger on-campus community by encouraging support for the football team and pushing for a pub on or near campus, among other initiatives.
Feinberg was raised in Rockaway, N.J. and is a communication studies major. A senator representing the College of Arts and Sciences, the senior was first elected to senate two years ago.
Although Feinberg has not had as much senate experience as his opponent, his past leadership roles and fraternity involvement could produce a substantial voting bloc. Feinberg served as president of Beta Theta Pi last year, and was risk manager and president of the discontinued Rhody Rides, a program that offered sober rides from Narragansett to campus for students in an attempt to decrease drunken driving incidents.
Feinberg said he believes in developing groups to their highest potential, as he has done in both Rhody Rides and Beta Theta Pi, and hopes to continue that trend in senate.
"In everything I've done, I've started at the bottom, absolute bottom, and worked my way up," Feinberg said.
A focal point of Feinberg's campaign is to advocate more on-campus activities and a stronger sense of identity among students. To accomplish this, Feinberg said he wants to build more support for the URI football team and develop plans for a pub on campus.
