02/20/08 - Correcting most of its wrongs from the last game against Richmond, the University of Rhode Island women's basketball team still fell short to the University of Dayton Sunday, 63-50.

"I thought our team played pretty well," head coach Tom Garrick said. "I thought we improved on trapping defenses."

Dayton jumped out to a quick lead in the first two minutes of action.

Kristin Daugherty, of Dayton, sunk four consecutive 3-point shots to take the 12-3 lead over URI.

"They were sluggish at the beginning," Garrick said about his team. "We made some runs at [Dayton]. They shot the ball pretty well in the first five minutes."

Junior Amanda McGrew, who scored a team-best 17 points, made the score 21-9 with her second 3-pointer of the game with 12:41 to go in the half. Junior Sierra Cooper scored 10 points in the game and classmate Ebony Evans had a career-high 11 rebounds.

"I thought our kids played admirably," Garrick said.

The last part of the first half had Dayton taking a large lead, only to have URI start to come back. Dayton got ahead of the Rams by 19 points with 4:41 left, making the score 37-18.

Dayton's Brittany Holterman scored back-to-back free throws.

"We put them on the foul line too much," Garrick said.

The Rams capitalized on four straight turnovers by the Flyers to make the score 37-29 with two minutes left of the half. Dayton scored three more points to take the 40-29 lead into the break.

Garrick thought the pivotal part of Sunday's game was the beginning of the second half.

"We got them to turn the ball over but we weren't able to complete fast break opportunities," he said. "[Dayton] had an odd man rush and we didn't do a good job exploiting that weakness."

Overall, the Rams converted 21 Dayton turnovers into 21 points and had nine steals. Junior Crystal Bellinger had three steals with eight rebounds and two assists.

URI, however, could only get within 11 points of the Flyers and never overtook.

"They got a better start than we did," Garrick said.

Tonight, the lady Rams will host LaSalle University at 7 p.m.

"La Salle is a pretty tough team and they have one of the best players in Carlene Hightower," Garrick said.

The Rams' strategy is to make Hightower, a senior, make as many tough shots as they can, Garrick said.

LaSalle has won its last two games. Last Saturday, the Explorers defeated Fordham University 84-67 and St. Louis University on Feb. 10, 61-42.

"I'm hoping we come out with a win," Garrick said. "We need to work on rebounding, defense and containing dribble penetration."
