02/15/08 - Everyone has one of those days when nothing goes right and you just can't get out of that funk.
The University of Rhode Island women's basketball team had one of those nights Wednesday at the University of Richmond losing 68-38.
"It was a bad night all around," head coach Tom Garrick said. "We didn't play well in any aspect. We didn't rebound, we didn't defend, and we didn't shoot well."
URI never had the lead, starting the game out behind with Richmond taking a 14-2 lead over the first five minutes. The Rams attempted a come back, going on an 11-2 run making the score 16-13 in Richmond's favor.
"Their shots were dropping and ours wasn't," Garrick said about why the Spiders jumped out to an early lead. "Our defense wasn't sharp."
URI was down 34-20 by half time. Richmond had a 28-10 rebounding average, while the Rams shot 9-30 from the field.
"They show the pension to be inconsistent," Garrick said about his team.
Senior Whitney Hollis and junior Amanda McGrew led the Rams in points, both scoring eight. Hollis also had three rebounds.
The second half did not look much better for the Rams. They were only able to get within 14 points of Richmond (45-31) and even trailed by 33 points (68-35) before scoring three more points for the final.
There was no pivotal point in the game since the Spiders had the win in their grasp the entire game. "It was all bad," Garrick said.
The Rams, now with a record of 11-13 (4-5 A-10), shot an overall 25.9 percent from the field while Richmond shot 51.8 percent. URI made only one out of seven three-point attempts.
"When you have a game like this you have to erase it but not forget about it," Garrick said. "We need to learn not to dwell and focus right now."
The lady Rams need to work on their focus Garrick said and play the game the same way everyday.
On Sunday the Rams will play the University of Dayton in Ohio at 2 p.m.
Dayton currently has a record of 19-5 (5-3 A-10). The Flyers on Feb. 9 defeated Fordham University 56-39 and last night played Xavier University.
"We want to try to go in there and get a win," Garrick said. "We hope to go in and play a hard fought game."
