02/15/08 - As the end of the year approaches, it is once again time for the University of Rhode Island Foundation's call for 2008 Excellence Awards nominations.

The awards honor those of the URI community who go beyond their responsibilities and work hard to benefit the university. There are four awards given: the Administrative Excellence, Scholarly Excellence, Staff Excellence and Teaching Excellence awards.

All four award winners will be recognized during spring graduation and honored before the URI community at the fall Convocation with a framed citation, $2,000 award and a pin.

"Letters of applications come in and there are committees for each of the categories, and some are made up of past winners," said Tracey Manni, the communications manager for the URI Foundation. "They review the nominations for the categories and select a winner. President Carothers notifies the winners that they've been selected."

Last year's winners included Candace Oviatt, who received the Scholarly Excellence Award, and Damon Rarick, who received the Teaching Excellence Award. Michael P. McDonald was awarded the Staff Excellence Award and Kathryn S. Meier received the Administrative Excellence Award.

The foundation has already received a half a dozen letters since opening nominations last week. "The excellence awards are generally viewed as positive means of recognizing the hard work and dedication of faculty and staff," Manni said.

The Administrative Excellence Award honors an outstanding administrator, including managers or department heads who are not faculty members.

The Scholarly Excellence Award honors research and artistic accomplishments of a full-time faculty member or researcher. The URI Foundation asks that recommendations include publications relevant to the nominee's scholarly work.

The Staff Excellence Award is awarded to a support staff member, while the Teaching Excellence Award honors merit in teachers looking for tenure. Prior recipients of the teaching award are not eligible. "Normally, we get between 60 to 80 nominations," Manni said.

Nomination letters must be received by Friday, March 7 at 4 p.m.

All nominations can be sent to the URI Foundation at 79 Upper College Road. The Administrative Award nominations should be addressed to Elizabeth C. Connors, the Scholarly Award nominations to Thomas N. Nather, the Staff Award to Denise K. Gorenski, and the Teaching Award to Galen A. Johnson. E-mails are accepted at jlewis@foundation.uri.edu.
