02/14/08 - Students elected 20 senators - 12 to at-large seats and eight for each academic college - to the University of Rhode Island Student Senate yesterday.

Elections Committee Chairwoman Cristin Langworthy said the elected candidates were a good mix of new and returning senators.

"There was a good chunk of people on senate who wanted to come back," she said. "It was kind of an even split between people already on Senate and new senators."

While past elections have seen uncontested seats, unfilled positions and ties, all positions in this election were filled. Only two positions - representatives for the College of Nursing and the College of Engineering - were uncontested.

The newly elected senators will be sworn in March 26 and begin their duties immediately, Langworthy said. If positions become open when the Senate elects executives from within its ranks, those vacant seats will be filled in Fall 2008 with a new election.

All 40 senate seats become available each spring, as well as the presidential and vice presidential positions. Elections for those positions, as well as for on and off-campus representatives, will be held Feb. 27 and 28. There will be a presidential debate at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26 in Atrium 2 of the Memorial Union.

Langworthy said there would be no presidential primary because there are only two candidates each for president and vice president.

Students can declare their candidacy for a seat as an on-campus or off-campus representative until Feb. 22. Langworthy said candidates should bring their student ID to the Student Senate office to officially enter the race. They can also submit an election platform that will run in the Cigar.

Students or candidates can contest the results of yesterday's election by submitting a written complaint by noon Monday, which must be delivered to the Student Senate office on the second floor of the Memorial Union. The student must include his or her contact information with the complaint, as well as a reason for contesting the results.
