02/14/08 - Josh Feinburg announced his candidacy for president of the University of Rhode Island student body before the URI Student Senate last night. He faces Thomas Ahrens in the Feb. 27 and 28 presidential election.
"I am proud and excited to announce my candidacy," Feinburg, a senior, said. "I feel I am the most qualified official at the senate."
Feinburg's running mate is Eric Klos, who is currently chairman of the senate's Finance Committee.
Feinburg told senators during an open forum that he had the necessary skills and background to lead the 11,500 undergraduate students at URI. Specifically, the communication studies major cited his experience as president of Beta Theta Pi.
"This experience has taught me how to work effectively through many challenges," he said. "These lessons will no doubt help me become a more effective president."
In other business, Ahrens, the chair of the senate's External Affairs Committee, said he expects them to increase contact with the Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union regarding Narragansett's Unruly Gathering ordinance. The ordinance, opposed by the senate, places bright orange stickers on the doors of "party houses" and fines renters. Senators say the ordinance unfairly discriminates against students while the town maintains that the policy helps reduce wild partying that disturbs neighbors.
