A couple of New York Giants fans celebrate their team's 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots at URI Sunday night.

2/5/08 - The University of Rhode Island campus was fairly quiet in the wake of a football game that would have put the New England Patriots in the history books. Fans at the URI campus took a few minutes to get away from their television sets to celebrate the 17-14 Super Bowl victory of the New York Giants over the previously undefeated New England Patriots, who were attempting to achieve an unprecedented 19-0 season.

A crowd of about 30 people gathered in front of Fayerweather Residence Hall and then moved onto Butterfield Road. Smaller groups of eight to 10 people also lined the street. Several police officers were in the area.

The group left for the Quadrangle after about 15 minutes of cheering slogans like "Buy a better team!" and "Let's go Giants!" Two fans were carrying and waving a Giants flag. After leaving the Quad, two Patriots fans wearing Tom Brady jerseys took the flag, ran with it and threw it in a trashcan. The small crowd of Giants fans dispersed after returning to Butterfield Road.

Campus Police followed the crowd in patrol cars. Campus Police Maj. Stephen Baker said the officers were intended to act as a deterrent in order to keep the crowds under control.

"There were no major problems," Baker said. "We had [officers] doubled up, checking in various dorms."

Baker said there were eight officers on patrol but the presence of police didn't contain all mischief.

"There was a little scuffle," Baker said. "Some pushing and shoving. We got there after [the fight]. They will be referred to the URI judicial system." The incident occurred behind Adams Residence Hall at about 11 p.m. and Baker said alcohol was involved.

Rob DeLano, a Giants fan who was celebrating with the small crowd, said he enjoyed the game.

"During the end, everyone was going nuts," he said. "I was so into it. It was a great defensive game on both sides."

The reason for the victory was clear to DeLano.

"The Giants are a better team," he said. "The Patriots undefeated season is now done. It just came down to one game," he said, recalling the moment when the Giants' Plaxico Burress caught a touchdown pass in the Patriots' end zone to give the Giants the lead for good.
