01/31/08 - Mentors provide healthy relationships and role modeling that help community youth succeed academically, socially and personally. Being a mentor gives you the opportunity to positively impact another's life in a profound way. The benefits of mentoring are numerous and the Clearinghouse for Volunteers would like to give you a taste of that rewarding feeling through Shadow Day 2008.
Many of you have participated before and we're hoping the fulfillment you got from your past experience will encourage you to both try it again and bring other enthusiastic volunteers with you. For those of you new to Shadow Day, let this be a chance to make a difference in someone else's life by sharing with them a piece of your own.
Spark an interest in a college education by having a youth from the Rhode Island College Crusade experience your school routine for a day and get a glimpse of life as a University of Rhode Island undergraduate. Take them to your classes, show them the campus and share with them what you love about URI. This is your chance to inspire future generations of URI students and share with them what it's like to be a Rhody Ram, simply by spending a day with them.
Students from years past have truly enjoyed the experience, making it a repeat success each spring. Now it's your turn to get involved. Think of anyone and everyone who helped get you where you are today and then consider your life without them. This is your chance to be a part of something great; this is your chance to help inspire success, one youth at a time.
Shadow Day will take place Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone is welcome to volunteer, but all participants must get signed permission by their professors to bring a Crusader to class, so please stop by the Clearinghouse to pick up the appropriate form and an information sheet about the event. All forms must be returned to the Clearinghouse no later than the morning of Feb. 20.
To sign up for Shadow Day, please visit the Clearinghouse for Volunteers in Roosevelt 125, call 874-2568, or e-mail CFV@etal.uri.edu. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this or other volunteer opportunities.
