01/31/08 - The University of Rhode Island Student Senate continued to prepare for its upcoming elections and discuss ideas for future events at last night's meeting.
Elections Committee Chairwoman Cristin Langworthy gave fliers to senators to post around campus and give to classmates. She said that the election's level of success will depend on turnout.
"You should encourage your friends to go out and run, it's going to be a good election if we do," Langworthy told senators.
Students have until Feb. 7 to declare their candidacy for the first round of elections. The first elections on Feb. 12 and 13 will determine representatives for all eight colleges and 12 at-large seats. The two sets of candidates for president and vice president that receive the most votes will move on to a second round of elections on Feb. 27 and 28. That round also will determine on-campus and off-campus representatives.
A facebook.com group and an advertisement in the Cigar have been used to promote the elections. An information session will be held on Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. in the Senate office in Room 201 of the Memorial Union for students interested in seeking office.
In other business, the Finance Committee gave $100 to the URI Contenders Academy. The new boxing organization needed money to pay USA Boxing for registration and insurance fees.
Also, the Student Entertainment Committee reallocated $20,000 from its talent account to its operational account. Before the transfer the operational account did not have enough to pay for lighting and stage costs according to SEC Secretary Treasurer Anne Salafia. The money was primarily transferred for SEC's upcoming comedy show featuring Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Demetri Martin and Nick Swardson.
"Our operational account is in the $50 range and our talent can cover that. We need operating and sound costs from our operational account," Salafia said.
Transferring funds is a typical practice by SEC near the end of the academic year to balance the budget, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Eric Klos said.
Also yesterday, nominations began for the Rules and Ethics Committee. Natalie Jacques, Gabe Mancuso and Samantha Gagnon were nominated for the committee. Nominations will reopen next week.
