1/25/08 - The University of Rhode Island administration hopes that a new road may alleviate incoming and outgoing traffic in the near future.
Flagg Road and Plains Road will soon be connected, providing access to the new science building and the possibility of a research center. The road will start at the back entrance of the Ryan Center parking lot and continue to the sharp turn on Plains Road near the C. Richard Skogley Turf Research Center.
URI Vice President for Administration Robert Weygand said the project would help "to improve traffic circulation and egress out of campus" and will "make good physical improvements."
On Monday, the proposed $9.6 million project will be presented in front of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. If it approves the project, the plan will be brought before the Rhode Island General Assembly.
The road will be part of the larger project. In addition, improvements will be made to the parking lot in Chafee Social Science Center, Keaney Gymnasium, and Parking Lot #1 near the Kingston Post Office. According to Weygand, the money for these improvements and ongoing maintenance will last five years.
The university is also speaking with the owners of private land near where the road would be designed and built.
The road is part of the master plan that URI developed in 2000 and added to in 2002. This includes the three new apartment complexes, a new dormitory to replace the Terrace Apartments and perhaps a parking structure in the Fine Arts commuter parking lot.
