12/06/07 - Sexy. Soulful. Real. These are a few words used to describe Amy Winehouse's debut album Frank, released recently for the first time in the United States. Composed of 12 tracks, Winehouse blends old school soul with raw lyrics on Frank.
On the track "Fuck Me Pumps," Amy playfully sings to the girls who just try too hard, sleeping around to get what they want: "Don't be too upset/if they call you a skank/ cuz like the news everyday you get pressed." Now how many times do you wish you could say that to some girl walking through campus looking as though she is up to no good?
Winehouse gets into a little R&B with the track "In My Bed." The song describes a situation - which many can relate to - when two people want different things out of the same relationship. "In the night/want the same thing where we lay/otherwise mine's a different way," Winehouse sings.
Winehouse keeps it real as an artist by discussing what is important to her - not bling and Manolo Blahniks as many other songwriters do today.
Tattooed and usually under some form of influence, Winehouse has been known to get into a little trouble every now and then. In August 2007, Amy and husband Blake Fielden-Civil spent five days in rehab together … I guess someone tried to make her go to rehab, and for once, she didn't say "No, no, no."
Two months later, the couple was arrested for marijuana possession in Norway.
One of Amy's most popular rampages was featured in magazines with the couple bloody and bruised after a fight in London. The fight was said to be over Blake finding Amy doing drugs with a call-girl in a hotel. Her husband is now in jail awaiting trial on charges of bodily harm.
Recently, Winehouse canceled her UK tour, and apologized but says she cannot go on without her husband's support. Rumor has it that she is using cocaine and heroin more than ever.
Amy Winehouse definitely does her own thing, even if it is doing drugs with a call-girl, but, given the strength of her talent, who am I to judge?
