11/28/07 - Fashion, superheroes, magic and comedy all collide for less than $20 during this week's annual Winterfest, hosted by the Student Entertainment Committee.

"We know that it's going to be a great set of events and we know that the students will really enjoy coming," Jen Cingari, SEC's public relations coordinator, said yesterday.

Kicking off the week's comic book - themed "Winterforce," yesterday were opportunities to take superhero photos in the Memorial Union, where students could pose as their favorite superhero for free.

Previous Winterfest themes have included Winterball, a sports-themed week and "Wintercourse," which had sex as its dominant theme.

"'Winterforce' goes with cartoons and superheroes," Cingari said. She added SEC was giving away masks, T-shirts and Bazooka gum to further promote this year's theme.

Last night also brought the Golden Mic's comedy show and presentation of its homemade movie of candid interviews and humorous stunts. Golden Mic is composed of URI students.

Tonight, students can see popular singer and songwriter Matt Nathanson, who graced the university with his presence at Winterfest two years ago to a nearly sold-out show. URI student Ben Carter will be opening for him, along with Ingrid Michaelson, an indie-pop artist, who is often featured "Grey's Anatomy" and Old Navy commercials.

If listening to Nathanson croon songs from his album, Some Mad Hope, doesn't sound too appealing, students might be interested in guests from the hit show Project Runway, a fashion show featuring several designers who compete for the winning spot and $100,000 to start their own line, among other winnings. Cingari said she thinks this event will be the most popular because of its wide span of viewers.

Jeffrey Sebelia, the season three winner, and a finalist from season two, Santino Rice, will be discussing what went on while the cameras weren't running, as well as fielding questions from the audience tomorrow night.

"They're going to talk about everything, from being on the show to all the drama that went on to what designing clothes is like on the set," Cingari said. "It's getting a glimpse at that reality show behind the scenes."
