11/9/07 - The University of Rhode Island women's ice hockey team fell 2-0 and tied 1-1 at Buffalo State University Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Rams hung tough with the Division III varsity program, but in the end the Bengals' constant pressure got to Rhody.

"We were prepared well, but after a nine hour bus ride it's more about getting your legs back," Rams head coach Beth McCann said.

The Bengals out shot the Rams 41-22 and 43-23 in games one and two respectively. This is a testament to goaltenders senior captain Lynn Pecci and freshman Nina Goncarovs, who recorded 39 and 42 saves each in their respective games.

"Lynn played excellently between the pipes and the two goals she did allow were both great goals," McCann said.

For Goncarovs it was her first career start, and she allowed just one goal midway through the first quarter of game two.

"Nina, playing in goal in the first game she has started all year, did a great job for us," McCann said.

Goncarovs preserved a 1-0 game until the 6:21 mark in the third period, when the Rams' Nikki Ouellette tied the game with assists going to Amanda Tassoni and Eloise Hodge.

"Nikki seems to always score goals when we need them, so my hat's off to her," McCann said.

Pecci gave up a goal late in the first period, and the Bengals tacked on an insurance goal in the third to put Rhody out of striking distance.

Pecci and Goncarvos have had the responsibility of goalkeeping duties along with Keri Houhoulis this season. Given Goncarvos performance Saturday, she may have played her way into more minutes.

"I never like to anticipate," McCann said. "We have three goaltenders, and I look forward to everyone getting out there and getting a chance."

McCann believes this is something that could work for the team not just over the next few games, but also for the rest of the season.

"I look forward to rotating the net all season and this weekend was a great opportunity to do so," McCann said.

This weekend the Rams will once again be on the road and out of American Collegiate Hockey Association play when they take on D-III Plymouth State and Norwich Universities Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Both programs were members of the ACHA last season that moved up from the club to varsity level this season.

"We're looking forward to a competitive weekend and I'm looking forward to seeing what becoming a Division-III varsity team does for a program," McCann said.

The following weekend the No. 4 Rams will return home to host the 2007 Women's Division-I ACHA Showcase, a tournament that will feature seven of the top teams in the division.
