11/9/07 - Three University of Rhode Island field hockey members who are hardworking both at academics and sports received All-Conference honors on Nov. 1.
Senior Jeannie Records was named to the Academic All-Conference squad while her teammates senior Jen Cetenich and sophomore Jill Powers were named to the All-Conference Second Team. The trio actively contributes something to the varsity Division I field hockey each year.
"I think it's cool that I made the team," Powers said.
Cetenich was very happy to make the team for the second year in a row.
"I was surprised by the selection this year but I was extremely grateful," she said.
Records and Cetenich are co-captains of the team this year. This is the first year that Records has received an Academic All-Conference honor.
Records has a cumulative grade point average of 3.90 as an international business major in addition to two minors in Spanish and Chinese. She was featured in the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete spotlight last year at the A-10 men's basketball championship.
Including her honors in academics, Records is a four-year starter on the field hockey team. She led the team in scoring when she was a freshman and continued to reach 28 career points. She also has scored two game-winning goals this season.
Cetenich, the other senior captain, finishes her career at URI as the second leading scorer with eight points this season. She has 38 career points.
"Field hockey here at URI has been quite the experience," Cetenich said. "But I have been blessed with amazing teammates and for that I am thankful."
Cetenich, along with Records, will be graduating in the spring. Cetenich will graduate with a degree in human development and family studies with a focus in child settings.
Powers, in her second year here, has already made a name for herself. She made the All-Rookie squad last year as a freshman and is now part of the Second Team.
"I think it would be awesome to make First Team next year with my age, maturity and the improvement on my game play," Powers said.
Powers led the team in scoring this season just ahead of Cetenich. She tied for eighth in the league with 16 points and tied for fourth in the conference with three game-winning goals.
"Jill is a great athlete and has improved so much in just one year," Cetenich said. "She definitely deserved the honor and I am extremely proud of her. I admire how she plays with such a die hard attitude and I truly enjoyed playing with her on the forward line during the last two seasons."
The field hockey season has ended and the team has a record of 7-9. Both Cetenich and Powers said that the season started off well but it fell apart after starting out 4-0.
"It definitely wasn't the way I wanted to end my field hockey career but I wish the girls better luck in their upcoming seasons," Cetenich said.
