The editor's scoop: No sports today

11/08/07 - If you turn to today's back page, you'll notice something that has not occurred in recent memory: the sports page is nowhere to be found.

This is not a reflection of our very hard-working Sports Editor Matt Pavao. He and his two sports reporters go above and beyond every day to attempt to cover all of URI's 20 Division I athletic teams and 14 club sports. But with three staffers and four issues a week, it's mathematically impossible.

Today, sadly, reporters just didn't have time to file any sports stories. With no URI sports stories, we had two choices. We could either run non-Cigar content pulled from the Associated Press - content that students could find in any major newspaper - or use the space for original content generated by our other departments. As you can see, we chose the latter option.

It was not an easy decision, but I believe it best serves students to dedicate a paper that they help pay for to stories written by students about students. No other paper will provide photographs from Greek Week events, a look at the lighting on campus or a piece about the chair of the university's capital campaign.

None of this is meant to minimize the importance of sports. We spend a significant amount of time, effort and money to cover athletics. But we need your help.

This year, sports reporters appear far and few between. With a growing journalism program, we had hoped someone would step up to the plate, but that has failed to materialize.

Working at the Cigar is a terrific way to gain real-life writing and reporting skills, and can help prepare you for a job after college. Plus, it's fun.

So if you're interested, please attend our meeting tonight - or any Thursday - at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union, Room 125. Or e-mail cigar@etal.uri.edu.
