11/06/07 - During a stormy Family Weekend, the University of Rhode Island volleyball team came from behind to defeat Duquesne University 3-2, but fell to Saint Louis University 3-0.

"Duquesne was one that we absolutely needed to win," head coach Bob Schneck said. "It was quite an ordeal, especially being down 14-11 in the fifth game, but it was quite rewarding to come back and win."

With the momentum in its court, Duquesne almost put the Rams away in the fifth and final game on Saturday. They took the first point and had the advantage. URI kept trying to come back to tie it but could never pull ahead. The Dukes had the 8-6 lead when the teams switched sides.

The Rams didn't give up even though they were down 14-11 and Duquesne only needed one point to take the win. The Rams scored five consecutive points to take the game 16-14 and the match 3-2.

"They comeback from behind," said Schneck about the most exciting part of the Duquesne match. "We have won all of our five-game matches."

Freshmen Lauren McIntosh and Kayla Newberg each had 18 kills, while junior Chinny Okpara had 13 kills. Okpara was in for freshman Amy Mellard who was out with the flu.

"Chinny did a fine job filling in," Schneck said, also adding that Newberg was also a standout player in the match. "I would like to bring recognition to [Newberg], she helped in the process," he said.

The Dukes took the first game of the match 30-23. Both teams were evenly matched and had to fight for each point. However, Duquesne captured the lead and never let go in game one.

The Rams showed their scrappy play in the second game to come away with the 30-28 win. They were neck and neck with the Dukes the entire game. Duquesne took the 7-5 lead, but URI came back to tie it and take the 8-7 lead. Then it was tied every other point until Duquesne pulled ahead at 24-23 and was leading 28-26 until URI tied it at 28 and never looked back.

The Rams took game three 31-29, another hard-fought win. URI took some late game points because Duquesne served some balls into the net.
