"We practice overtime quite a bit early in the year," he said. "We also had overtime versus Army and double overtime versus Brown this season. We are fairly experienced."
UMass won the toss in overtime and deferred possession. URI scored its first touchdown of the game on sophomore backup quarterback D.J. Stefkovich's one-yard touchdown run. Stefkovich was filling in for an injured junior Derek Cassidy. This gave Rhode Island a 12-6 lead, but the extra point failed. The Minutemen then had its turn with the ball, but their hopes of victory ended when senior Adrian Owen intercepted a pass at the three-yard line. Stowers was pleased with his team's play.
"Anytime you can beat the number three ranked team in the country, it gives you a lot of confidence," the head coach said. "It's a shot in the arm, and will help us to finish out the season strong."
Running back junior Jimmy Hughes had 93 yards rushing and 36 yards receiving for the Rams, leading the team in both categories. Freshman Matt Hansen, senior Steve Marrella, and senior L.T. Brantley led the defense with 10 tackles apiece. Giannecchini scored all six points for URI. Rhode Island won their second game of the season, both in overtime, improving their overtime record to 2-1. Next Saturday, URI heads to Orono, Maine to take on the University of Maine. They wrap up their season at home the following Saturday against Northeastern University.
