11/06/07 - To the Cigar, Rhode Island has almost 200 students who are receiving veterans benefits and a fair number of these students have recently seen active duty in combat zones. A group of staff and students interested in supporting student veterans and their families began to meet this semester. One result is a program entitled "Understanding the Student Veteran" to be held this Thursday, Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. in Memorial Union Atrium 2.
This program will feature Jennifer Lambert, a psychologist from the Veterans Administration, and will give faculty and staff an opportunity for dialogue with student veterans and their families.
While designed with faculty and staff in mind, students are certainly welcome to attend.
As many of us look forward to having a day off on Nov. 12 in honor of Veterans Day, it is timely to take this opportunity to acquaint ourselves with this growing part of our student body so that we are better prepared to help them succeed.
