11/01/07 - In a tight five game match, the University of Rhode Island volleyball team came from behind to win against Fordham University last Saturday, winning 3-2.
Freshman Kayla Newberg had 20 kills and six blocks while freshman Lauren McIntosh had 15 kills. Senior Kaira Kachadurian had 41 assists to even URI's record at 12-12 and 4-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
"It was a must win for us in order to still be in the contingency of making it into the championships," head coach Bob Schneck said. "It was a really scary match. It was like we were playing in mud. They were slow to react to the ball."
The Rams won the opening game 30-25, then dropped the next two games 30-27 and 30-18.
The Rams rallied back to win game four 30-26, and game five 15-11. According to Schneck, winning the fifth game proved that the girls had the perseverance to continue and win.
"It shows a lot of mental toughness," he said.
Schneck said that Newberg and McIntosh picked up the other players, who were not doing so well, to carry the team to a victory. Schneck said received the short serve well and were able to do quite well.
Sophomore Caitlyn Welsh did not have a good first few games, but she came back in the last two to combine for 32 digs with junior Peggy Doino.
"[Fordham] pretty much beat us in statistics," Schneck said. "They did a lot of things better than us."
Up next for the Rams will be a home game against Duquesne University this Saturday, a game the Rams are expected to win.
"We need to win against Duquesne," Schneck said. "It should be an easier match mentally because we beat them in three at their place."
After Duquesne, the team plays the top three teams in the A-10: St. Louis University (Sunday at 1 p.m.), the University of Dayton and Xavier University.
"We need to play our absolute best against them," Schneck said. "There is no pressure against us because we are expected to lose."
He added, "We have a rough road ahead of us and we just need to play loose."
