11/01/07 - Now that the candy-crazed festivities of Halloween have come and gone, it's time to turn your attention to another important holiday, Thanksgiving. November is full of opportunities for those of you who want to lend a helping hand and celebrate the season by giving back to your community. Whether you want to serve a traditional dinner or utilize your craft skills, there are agencies that could use your help. Below are just a few of the available opportunities.

Nov. 3 - Chester W. Barrows School Painting Project

Help repaint the school's recess area at 9 Beachmont Ave. in Cranston from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will be painting hopscotch, a U.S. map, and other things on the blacktop. No art skills necessary.

Nov. 10-11 - Warwick Boys and Girls Clubs Gingerbread Decorating Competition Extravaganza! ..

This event will be held at the Warwick Mall. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up and clean up, registration, and coordinating special events throughout the day. A short training will be provided that day, and volunteers will be paired with a Boys & Girls Club staff member. Experience with children is a plus, as coordinating children's activities is one of the opportunities available.

Nov. 14 to 16 and 20 to 22 - Salvation Army Thanksgiving Baskets

Sort and organize canned goods and pack Thanksgiving baskets that will be distributed to local families during the holiday.

Nov. 22 - St. Patrick Church/Maryhouse Ministry Thanksgiving dinner

The theme is "Don't be alone for the Holidays." More than 100 volunteers are needed to serve dinner guests from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 244 Smith Street in Providence (3 blocks up from the state house.) Please note: You must register to volunteer. Please do not just show up.
