10/31/07 - The University of Rhode Island women's ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina University and the University of Massachusetts last weekend at home, winning both games 3-1.
"I think the team played very well," head coach Beth McCann said. "We are still trying to develop chemistry between players but it's always a positive to win against a Division III team."
Salve Regina is a D-III team and an instate rival that the Rams played Friday night. The Rams broke out in the first period, scoring the first goal by freshman Emily Gasper. She was assisted by freshman Michelle Paquin.
Salve came back to tie but not for long. Another freshman, Caroline Greene, scored the second goal for URI to take the lead. Sophomore Nicole Ouellette solidified the victory with another goal, which made the score 3-1.
"Emily Gasper put us on top," McCann said about the pivotal point of the game. "She is a great addition to defense. We had two freshmen step up to the plate."
Senior goalie Lynn Pecci also had a good night, saving 28 shots out of 29.
"She played phenomenally," McCann said. "She was focused and ready."
The Rams then played UMass Saturday night, winning 3-1. The game went into the second period with no score, however URI jumped out in front again on a power play goal in the second by freshman Justine Ducie. Junior Kate Garcia and freshman Amanda Tassoni assisted Ducie's goal.
"That shows that we've grown," McCann said about scoring the power play. "They worked the puck pretty well."
UMass responded by tying the game, only to have Ouellette score to take the lead 2-1.
"Nikki Ouellette comes out being a great player this game," McCann said. "She really comes through in the end and really pushes herself to the limit."
Rhody sophomore Jolene Rambone scored the final goal of the game on an empty net with 14 seconds left to win.
The Rams currently have a 3-0 record for the season.
This weekend URI will head to the State University of New York at Buffalo to face the NCAA D-III team.
"This game will give us a lot of opportunity to play with our lines and to see what we are made of," McCann said. "We added nine freshmen this year and are still trying to find our chemistry. We still need to work on things on offense and defense."
McCann said that last year Buffalo was a tough team and it will be a competitive game this weekend.
"We never take a game lightly and it will show us our strengths and weaknesses," she said.
