10/30/07 - For the third time in a row, on Saturday the University of Rhode Island football team faced a nationally ranked opponent and lost.
Rhody dropped a 49-36 decision at the University of New Hampshire in front of a crowd of more than 6,000 at Cowell Stadium in Durham, NH.
The Wildcats entered the contest with one of the top offenses in Division-IAA, and put it on display racking up 529 total yards.
"We were up against Rickey Santos, and he's one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play in the CAA [Colonial Athletic Association]," Rams head coach Tim Stowers said.
Santos torched the Rams through the air, finishing 24-of-30 for 419 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Rams countered in this high scoring affair with their usual grind-it-out ground game. Rhody rushed for 430 yards on 77 attempts, with juniors Joe Casey and Jimmy Hughes doing most of the damage.
Hughes finished the game with 173 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, while Casey racked up 113 yards on 23 carries. However, Casey aggravated a shoulder injury late in the third quarter.
"Joe Casey had a pretty good ball game for us, but unfortunately he's going to be questionable heading into this weekend," Stowers said.
Also going down was junior quarterback Derek Cassidy with an ankle injury late in the second quarter. He is also listed as questionable this weekend.
Before leaving the game, Cassidy was 3-of-4 for 52 yards from the air and amassed 73 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts on the ground.
After entering halftime with a 24-21 advantage, the Rams turned to sophomore D.J. Stefkovic in the second half who took a little time to shake off the cobwebs.
"It took D.J. a little longer to get in the groove, but once he did he started to play much better," Stowers said.
The Rams offense hit a rut in the third quarter, with the Wildcats outscoring Rhody 14-0. UMass took a 35-24 advantage over the Rams heading into the final quarter.
