10/30/07 - The University of Rhode Island field hockey team had a chance to close their season with a .500 record, but it couldn't get anything going against a tough conference opponent during the weekend.

The team lost to the University of Massachusetts by a score of 3-0 on Saturday during Senior Day.

URI seniors M.J. Britt, Jen Cetenich, Kaitlin Chaput, Meghan Daly, Lauren Kurr, and Jeannie Records were honored prior to the start of the game.

Head coach Amanda Heryla had nothing but praise for her six seniors.

"They have been great," Heryla said. "They helped me and the assistant coaches all season, worked very hard, and will be missed."

The game was scoreless for almost 27 minutes before the Minutewomen got on the board first.

UMass led by one goal going into the half, keeping the game within reach for URI but UMass would score twice more to put the game away.

For the game, the Rams were out-shot 12-6, including only two shots on goal as opposed to UMass's 10.

Despite the final score, Heryla said the women played hard.

"We played very well, the girls were very excited," she said. "We stuck with the game plan well. A few times we weren't in the right spot, and maybe the game would have gone a little differently."

The loss was part of a 1-7 stretch to end the season, which included five straight losses.

However, the beginning of the season showed promise as URI started out with four straight victories en route to a 6-2 record.

After recording its sixth win with a victory over in-state rival Brown University, the Rams had trouble winning, turning a once winning record into a losing one.

With the 1-6 conference record, Rhode Island did not finish in the top four of the conference and will not participate in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships.

Heryla, in her first year with the team, had hoped the season would not end this early.

"The season didn't turn out the way we wanted it to," she said. "We did make strides, the girls played hard, and they did a good job with the new system. We would have liked to win a few more games."
