10/26/07 - When people reach the college level, students hear more times than they can count that our college memories will last them a lifetime. Alumnus Beth Iacobucci Brown is living proof of this.

Brown began her career at the University of Rhode Island in 1992 and graduated in 1997. Since the very beginning of college, Brown was a member of the school's swim team.

In 1993 she was named URI's Most Outstanding Freshman Female Athlete and the New England Intercollegiate Champion for the 500 freestyle event.

On Friday, Nov. 2, at the Quidnessett Country Club, Brown will be inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatics Hall of Fame.

Her husband, Thomas Brown, fellow URI swimming alumnus, nominated her to the prestigious hall of fame.

When Brown found out that the board accepted her nomination, she said that she was both proud and pleased. Since she was six years old, Brown has been involved with swimming.

"My older sister and brother belonged to the Little Rhody Aquatic Club in Providence and my mom decided it would be easier if all the kids did one sport; therefore she placed me on the team with them," Brown said.

Having two children, Sadie and Mcgovern, ages three and five, and being pregnant with her third child makes it difficult for Brown to return back to the water.

After college, she took a few years off from swimming, but began again during both of her pregnancies. She stopped after Sadie was born.

Brown said she is sure that once her children are older, she will be able to return to the pool.

Brown is still involved with URI aquatics, as she is the secretary of the swim team alumni association, the Fast Lane Club.

"I have built a strong e-mail database of swim alumni that we contact on a monthly basis to keep them updated on swim meets and fundraising events," she said.

In her spare time, Brown said she likes to exercise.

"Be it in the gym taking aerobic or step classes, or running outside, I love being active," she said. "My husband and I ran the Kona Hawaii Marathon a few years back, and I still run for pleasure these days."

Brown met her husband through the URI swim team when she was a freshman and he was a junior. She said they started dating immediately after they met. This is one of her fondest memories while at the university. She said that the strong friendships she formed with both her roommates as well as fellow members of the swim team are priceless and that she still remains in contact with some.

Brown currently resides in Johnston, R.I. with her husband and two children. She has been with the Dunkin Donuts Franchise for over eight years and is now a business manager.

Saturday Nov. 3 she will be attending and assisting at the Tootell Physical Education Center, the new home for RIAHOF. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
