10/25/07 - To the Cigar,

So that there is no confusion or possible misinformation on the matter, the Department of Housing and Residential Life did not authorize the removal of the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Center letters from the Adams Residence Hall sign as was reported as "theorized" by Mr. Jerry Sidio in yesterday's Cigar article on the topic of the early September defacement of said sign.

My staff and I are very interested in determining the source of the removal, whether it was mistakenly removed by a University of Rhode Island employee as noted by the eyewitness or intentionally vandalized as originally reported to the Campus Police. The sign is the property of Housing and Residential Life and we will fully assist university authorities during its investigation of this incident, and, further, we will continue to speak out against acts of campus hatred and bigotry.

Housing and Residential Life has housed the GLBT Center and related support offices at no cost to that organization and has served as a partnering sponsor to many GLBT Center events and programs for many years.

As such, it is very important that any possible misperceptions that may exist as a result of yesterday's article are clarified, and I hope that this brief note serves to do so.
