The former players stayed in a game that was tied 2-2 during the third period, but eventually fell to the current URI women's team. The teams exchanged goals throughout, with the current women's team scoring first, followed by the alumna. The alumna then answered another score by URI, notching the score up at two.
When Rhody scored its third goal, the alumna had no answer. A pulled goalie with a minute left and a few desperation shots as time expired was all the alumna could try; they failed in the attempt.
The game was more of a fun time than an intense, competitive game. Both coaches were constantly smiling while the players enjoyed their time out on the ice.
This is the first season in which an alumna game has been played and it was immediately recognized as a success.
"It's a great event," URI head coach Beth McCann said. "It's a great day to trade stories with the alumna about when they played hockey in Warwick. The alumna used to leave campus at 4:30 a.m. for practice."
Despite the fun time, the team must now focus on the upcoming schedule, which includes two home games this weekend.
The Rams' current season kicked off Oct. 13 and lasts until March 9. There are three team captains for this year's team. Senior forward Chelsea Skorupski, senior defenseman Ashley Pagliarini and senior goalie Lynn Pecci will be leading this year's team.
The expectations for this season are extremely high after last year's successful season. The Rams posted a record of 16-5-1 in last year's regular season league play.
"Our goal this year is to make it to the Final Four and take it from there," McCann said. She also said that for this season to play out the way she wants it to, the team must live up to the expectations she has set.
This was the second game of the season for URI, although the win won't count on its record. The Rams started the season off with an impressive win against the University of Connecticut, 16-1.
Rhody returns to action with two games this weekend at home. The Rams play state rival Salve Regina University on Friday and the University of Massachusetts on Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m. at the Boss Ice Arena.
