10/24/07 - The University of Rhode Island has many different international education programs for students. These programs have grown during the years, but the housing for their offices have not.

With the public phase of the university's Making a Difference Campaign in motion, President Robert L. Carothers and his wife Jayne Richmond, dean of University College, donated $100,000 to URI to help finance an International Center for Students and Scholars.

"Our international programs have continued to grow, but the facilities have not grown," Richmond said.

The International Center for Students and Scholars will be three stories tall and will be attached to the Multicultural Center. A gallery with a glass upper level that can be used as a meeting space will connect the two buildings. The building will house the International Students and Scholars office, the Study Abroad office and the office for faculty-led study abroad programs.

The bottom floor of the building will contain two apartments, which will be used as temporary housing for visiting scholars or new students.

Since most students walk by the Multicultural Center every day, attaching the International Center for Students and Scholars made sense from a visibility standpoint as well as a way to create synergy between the two buildings, Richmond said.

"[It was a] magnificent opportunity with the Multicultural Center being in the heart of campus," Richmond said.

The center will not only be of use to current faculty, staff and students. Richmond and Carothers hope that it will encourage alumni from different countries to return to their alma mater.

"We would like to see our international alumni come back," Carothers said. "[The center] will give international alumni a place of their own."

Carothers also believes that the return of international alumni would provide current international students with role models and inspiration. This will provide the current generation with a stronger link to URI that could bring them back after they graduate as well.
