10/23/07 - In the last 10 years I have experienced a wide variety of concerts, from boy band pop to rap to rock and even country, but never have I experienced a more simple and intimate concert than the Matt Nathanson show in Northampton, Mass. on Oct. 13.

The Pearl Street Nightclub was filled close to capacity as college students and even a few older folks filled the club. The stage was just large enough for a full band and Nathanson made sure he used all the room he had. He moved flawlessly with his guitar around the stage smiling at the bass player and extra guitar player to either side of him.

He got the crowd going with the song "Car Crash" off his recently released album Some Mad Hope. After playing the last note of this song, he showed the crowd his comical side as he responded to fans' remarks.

I yelled "Matt we love you," and he responded "I love you too…oh wow, I have never actually seen the face of the person who yelled it. I love you in a special way. And now as for my wife."

Through the next 20 minutes we were graced with a few songs off his newest album (although most of the songs were from his older album) and even a few twists. Throughout these twenty minutes we heard Nathanson's rendition of "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's, and an improv of The Flight of The Conchords' "Business Time," before exploding into his own song, "Come on Get Higher."

"I love you Matt," shouted a deep voice from the back of the club. "I love you too, faceless lad in the darkness," Nathanson shouted back.

Nathanson worked through some sound difficulties as the tech support off to the side was struggling to perfect the mic for his comfort. Despite the struggles, Nathanson still sounded amazing as he went about tickling all the college girls fantasies with his adorable smile and rugged softness behind his guitar.

"Play 'Starfish and Coffee,'" someone yelled.

"Mmm. Maybe Prince will do that for you another night. I think I am going to stick to my new stuff since that's what this tour is all about." The crowd laughed and cheered as Nathanson broke into his song "Gone" which he dedicated on stage to Enrique Inglesias' hair.
