10/23/07 - Hey, Kelly.

I noticed in your response to my article about hangover cures that you seemed to be a bit upset. From your response I felt that you were accusing me of promoting the University of Rhode Island's reputation as a party school and promoting binge drinking.

First off, the fact that URI has this reputation has nothing to do with me. This reputation is something that took shape before I was even born. When I tell people that I go to that school, not only do they ask if it's a party school but they are concerned about the academics as well.

You say that when employers look at your resume and see that you went to URI, they laugh and you think that they don't respect your professionalism (I'm assuming), thus causing you not to get the job. That matter is not a public issue, but is your own personal problem.

The main reason why I wrote the article about hangovers is because the bar life at URI is very popular. Once students turn 21, a new world is opened to them and they take advantage of it. I wanted to help those who overindulge in drinking or are "lightweights" and need to drink only small amounts to get a hangover.

I think the thing that bothered me the most about your letter is that you claim that the only way you can get a hangover is from binge drinking. Thanks to Facebook.com, I noticed you're a journalism major just like me. We report the truth and facts to the public. My question to you is, what is your source of information that proves the aforementioned statement? Did you get it from a professional? A book? Or is this something you're assuming?

Kelly, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you at all, but when you claim URI makes employers laugh, not only are you upsetting me, you're upsetting students and faculty who work hard at this institution.

Finally, URI is always going to be considered a party school and it's going to be tough to break that. It's the students who have to distinguish themselves from that reputation and show employers that not only do you know how to do a keg stand but you're very intelligent and capable as well.

Kelly, it's been a pleasure and I hope we can do this again.
