10/23/07 - To the Cigar,

This past summer, a co-worker of mine shared with me his mother's favorite quote: "The time is now and the place is here." As I returned to the University of Rhode Island for my senior year, I knew I was embarking on the final chapter of my college career. I got to thinking that this was my last chance to impact the university as a student. In addition, this semester meant entering my new role, as president, of an organization that is near to my heart, the Public Relations Society.

As public relation's pre-professionals, PRS's strives to help publicize a group, a message, a student, a department, or a cause. Through internship, classroom, extracurricular and life experiences, we come together each week to brainstorm ways in which we can help our "clients," or people that come to PRS, seeking event planning, media relations and publicity.

This month, we observed the meaning of all of the special pink products, services and information that support breast cancer for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Like many other student groups, the Public Relations Society wants to use the power of our social network, as students of URI, to spread the word and raise awareness for breast cancer.

We created an event to take place on Wednesday Oct. 24, to support our "PRS goes PINK!" campaign, in hopes to empower students and raise money and awareness for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Our vision is that for one day, students across campus will come together and wear pink to show their support for breast cancer patients, research and survivors. In exchange for wearing pink, students will receive discounts as well as specials and/or free food at participating vendors in the Kingston Emporium on that day.

In conjunction with the campus-wide "pink-out," students can "donate their change to make a change" at the various locations and the Memorial Union PRS booth, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. (www.bcrfcure.org)

At this point in our lives, breast cancer has touched all of us in some way, through friends and family, or simply when we walk into the supermarket and see pink wrapped packages and magazine covers. For this one month each year, the color pink becomes a symbol of unity and understanding, empathy and respect. As a student organization, PRS recognized that "the time is now" for us to utilize the power of pink.

To get involved, all you have to do is wear PINK on Wed. Oct. 24 to participate in the event and "go pink" with PRS. Look at it this way; it's one less thing you have to think about on Wednesday.
