Spring Break
09/06/07 - Welcome to the University of Rhode Island and, for many of you, welcome back. Students should not take the education they receive at Rhode Island's only state university lightly. As President Robert L. Carothers is fond of saying, less than 1 percent of 1 percent of the world's population gets to attend college, so make the most of it.
09/06/07 - I'm going to first acknowledge that I've never done this before. Running a college newspaper published four times a week is a dramatic undertaking loaded with responsibility. I am both humbled and honored that the board that oversees the Good Five Cent Cigar considered me qualified to lead this 36-year-old paper read by thousands of students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and others each year.
09/06/07 - Progress, say the latest political strategists, is once again a fine word to use in campaigns, whether you're talking about social services or the surge strategy in Iraq. Now a senior in college, I'd like to label myself a progressive. I'm not talking about voter referenda, a third political party, or even Hillary Clinton's stance on civil unions.
09/06/07 - On behalf of the Clearinghouse for Volunteers, let me say welcome to what is sure to be another (or your first) great year at URI. Having just returned to URI, or moved in for your first semester, you may be thinking these first few weeks should be focused on getting settled and adjusting to early morning classes, but how about jumping right into volunteering? If you don't know quite where to start, yet you know you want to get involved, consider spending some of your time as an AmeriCorps member with Jumpstart URI.
09/06/07 - During the summer, the Cigar staff put their heads together and came up with a list of things we think every University of Rhode Island student should do before graduation. This list is in no particular order and offers a starting point for those who are new to the university.
