04/29/08 - The University of Rhode Island's women's track team competed in the final primer before the A-10 championship this weekend at the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday morning. Many Rams posted promising performances in the non-scoring event.
Freshman Stephanie Reusch was the only Ram to take home first place honors on the day when her time of 1:03:41 was enough in the 400 meter hurdles to edge out the competition. She was not done there though, also placing second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.96 seconds.
Freshman Crystal Bourque managed to reel in a second place finish in the hammer throw with her heave of 48.09 meters. She also placed ninth in the discus (34.06 meters) and 13th in javelin (32.77 meters). She wouldn't be the only rookie making her mark on Sunday - fellow freshman Tayla Sawtelle grabbed third place in the hammer throw with a final distance of 44.83 meters.
Senior Katie Kostiew took fourth place honors in the discus (39.42 meters) and fifth place in the shot put (13.07 meters). Junior Ashley Robinson's time of 26.67 seconds was enough in the 200 meter-dash to find a way into the third place slot. She also captured seventh place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00:15. Sophomore Stephanie Gregory's hurled herself over the 3.35 meter mark in the pole vault to capture a third place finish in the event.
The Rams will put it all on the line this Saturday when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship in Amherst, Mass.
