10/14/05 - Last weekend homecoming took place at the University of Rhode Island: the annual football game, food, reunions, and the crowning of this year's Homecoming Queen, Erin Leyden.

Leyden, a native Rhode Islander, grew up in East Greenwich. She was very involved in her town and in her high school by doing a lot of community service.

Leyden, now a senior at URI, is an active member of the student body. She said she felt honored to be nominated by her sorority Zeta Epsilon Tau Alpha. Leyden is president of ZETA.

"It's such an honor because it's not like in high school where receiving the homecoming vote is based on popularity," Leyden said. "In college, it's based on accomplishments."

A girl that means what she says, Leyden, is an accomplished student at URI. Including her involvement with Greek life on campus, she is a summer orientation leader and the head student coordinator for orientation. She is also a URI 101 mentor and is involved with intramural sports.

"I attempt to reach all aspects of campus life," Leyden said.

"My sorority sisters were really excited about it and urged me to go ahead with it," Leyden said. "They told me they were thinking of nominating me and I was flattered. I was put into the final three and the students voted. It was a very exciting yet humbling experience for me."

Leyden was crowned at the homecoming bonfire last Thursday and again at the football game. "It was very exciting," she said. "When I found out, I called my parents and my boyfriend. I was so happy that they came down that weekend. It was a big celebration."
