9/19/06 - Many times unexposed local rock bands struggle creating a decent first album. They are the ones who bang away at basement shows or tiny coffee houses, while it's clear that the small audience of grungy teens are just there for the free music. Even though some of these bands may have one or two slightly catchy songs, the rest sound pretty lame and immature. This surely is not the case for Neo Nouveau; a unique rock band straight out of Providence.
For their album Forks and Knives, they've mixed together an addicting sound of indie-rock, new-wave and pop rock. With a sound similar to Hot Hot Heat and a little bit of the Strokes, this band's music is perfect for this sandy New England state that's nearing the end of the summer season.
While only one vocally strained song made my hair stand on ends and my stomach cringe, every other song on the album had something new and different to offer. Each track leaves you anticipating the next one.
The album ranges from upbeat songs, perfect for high-speed, windy road trips, to mellow relaxing songs good for just chilling out. I was very impressed with this local band. They honestly sound like the real deal, and are far better than other new-wave rock bands that I've heard on the radio or TV.
Because their music fits under so many genres, all sorts of people would appreciate this album. The album has a "beachy" feel to it as well. It is the type of music that pulsates through your body while shopping at places like Pac Sun or Hollister. Forks and Knives sends out good vibes.
One of the weak aspects of this album, however, was the simplicity of the guitar. Although in many songs it fits in nicely, guitarists Titus DosRemedios and Dylan Ryder play the same kind of beat throughout each song. The sound becomes very predictable as the CD goes on.
Forks and Knives brings light to hidden, indie-rock garage bands, trying to make themselves heard in this pop overwhelmed world. Neo Nouveau really has what it takes to make it out there, and has the ability to attract all sorts of different people.
Every now and then a band comes along bringing a new and unique sound to music-craving college kids. They have simple beats but the energy and talent to become something great one day. Neo Nouveau is definitely this kind of band.
You can check out Neo Nouveau Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Century Lounge, along with the Viennagram.
