09/04/08 - To the Cigar,Maybe you noticed the big blue recycling truck when you were moving into your residence hall. That was URI Recycling, working hard to recycle thousands of cardboard boxes.
We picked up many, many boxes from computers, printers, televisions and refrigerators, among other things necessary for a wonderful residential experience.
Recycling students and staff separated the cardboard from the plastic and Styrofoam inside. We piled it into our truck and brought it down to our building where we put it into a thirty cubic yard roll off for recycling.
URI Recycling is here to help you recycle cans & bottles in blue bins, and mixed paper in green bins. We recycle cardboard in tan dumpsters around campus. We will pick up toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges and alkaline batteries. If you save you plastic shopping bags you can call us and we'll come get them.
Do you have questions about how to recycle? Please call 874-2840, send an e-mail to recycle@etal.uri.edu, or stop by the recycling office in the little white house across from the Ryan Center box office. We can help you with community service or other volunteer opportunities, and because we love to talk about our work we would be delighted to speak in your class or for your organization.
We could not have recycled all the cardboard we did without your help. Many thanks to the students and their families who flattened their boxes for us, and many thanks to the URI staff who helped in this huge effort.
We welcome all your ideas for new recycling initiatives. We look forward to a successful year of working toward zero waste.
I look forward to meeting you all!
